Chapter 11 â They Were Everywhere
Without much pomp and circumstance, we were on the move. I was surprised how seamlessly Council Security worked with the NYPD... almost as if they trained on drills for this sort of thing.
And our caravan was led by two police cruisers into Manhattan, over the bridge instead of the tunnel, since surface streets allowed better security or something like that. One unmarked police SUV driven by Sofia trailed the five Aelftus vehicles.
We didn't take a direct route, and I knew why once I overheard over Ivan's earbud about back-channel chatter on the mercenary dark web that an open contract had been issued for Deidre James last night by 'interested parties'. The bastards put a price on my cousin's head.
And as anxious as the atmosphere was in the SUV with her and her children, Tana and me, and the Cookie Twins up front. It looked to be much ado about nothing as we traveled smoothly through the city.
I sighed audibly and just smiled at the twins and Jacob in the third-row seating, when the world erupted into a cacophony of sound, as we were thrown in our seats to the side, my shoulder striking the door that crushed in toward me. The sound of armor plating bending and bulletproof glass cracking but not breaking as my head hit it, my seat belt the only thing preventing me from more damage as the SUV was pushed sideways, tires squealing and protesting, off the street and into an alley by the huge garbage truck that hit us going thirty or forty miles per hour when it came streaking out of the opposing alley mouth.
My vision was swimming and my ears were ringing as the tires caught and the SUV flipped sideways, once, then twice, before settling on its hood. Someone was yelling out orders, and something about, âThey've isolated our vehicle.â
My head cleared enough that I realized in my disorientation that we were all hanging upside down by our seatbelts. Tana was repeating my name as she dropped to the roof of the vehicle at almost the same time Ivan, Pietor, Deidre, and the twins did. âKilly, are you ok? Come on, we have to move.â
What? Oh yes. I was floundering for the seatbelt button while Charity and Mercy were helping a stunned Jacob out of his. Tana pressed the button and cushioned me the best she could when I fell to the roof. I wiped the blood from my eyes with a shaky hand as she was asking, âAre you ok, Killy?â
I took a deep breath to clear my head and nodded through the excruciating headache, âYeah, I think so. What's happening?â
Ivan kicked his door twice before it flew open, metal screeching. He rolled out and automatic gunfire sounded as he rolled to his feet and was already firing his pistol while Pietor was snapping instructions, âEveryone out, stay low, use the vehicle for cover, and stay behind Ivan and me. We'll be moving fast.â
He drew his
